Nalgene Removes Water Bottles From Stores Due to Potential Health Concerns

Nalgene has decided that it will remove some of its hard-plastic products made with bisphenol, or BPA, from stores during the next few months because the chemical may cause health problems. The company decided to substitute the plastic after reports stated that the Canadian government would label BPA as a toxic chemical and some animal studies showed harmful effects.

The general manager of the Nalgene unit, Steven Siverman, said in a statement, "Based on all available scientific evidence, we continue to believe that Nalgene products containing BPA are safe for their intended use. However, our customers indicated they preferred BPA-free alternatives, and we acted in response to those concerns."

A study completed on rats demonstrated that some of the rats that were fed or injected with low doses of BPA developed precancerous tumors, urinary tract infections, and reached puberty early. This evidence shows that there is a possibility that the chemical could alter human development. The American Chemistry Council has asked the FDA to review the chemical.

Also, some of Canada's retailers, including Wal-Mart, have decided to remove food-related products that contain the chemical, such as baby bottles and food containers, from their shelves.

The chemical has been used on the interiors of cans in an exopy resin to extend the shelf life of its contents and to prevent the contents from tasting like metal.
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Tractor-Trailer Falls from NYC Highway Nearly Killing Grandmother, Baby

A grandmother and her granddaughter were nearly killed in a car accident, on Tuesday, when a tractor-trailer fell from an elevated highway and crashed down in front of their car, hitting the hood.

The woman was traveling westbound on the Staten Island Expressway with her one-year-old granddaughter, when the truck tumbled off the highway above them. Hearing a very loud sound, the grandmother instinctively slammed on her brakes.

The tires of the tractor-trailer landed on the hood of her car, had she not stopped, the trailer would have crushed them. The body of the trailer was straight-up, cab first with its back end leaning against the elevated highway.

Neither grandmother nor child were injured in the accident.

The truck driver suffered broken bones in the accident and is in stable condition.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

Carnival Cruise Lines Sued in Medical Malpractice Lawsuit

A medical malpractice lawsuit filed in Miami federal court alleges the Carnival Cruise Ship infirmary staff, committed malpractice when they gave a passenger the wrong medication.

The lawsuit alleges the ship's doctor and infirmary staff mistreated and misdiagnosed a 73-year-old passenger, resulting in her death, according to court documents.

On September 6, 2006, the woman was suffering from a build up of fluid on her lungs. She went to the ship infirmary where they gave her fluid, the wrong thing to do in her case.

The complaint claims the cruise medical staff in effect allowed her to drown in her own fluids. As she suffered, the Captain of the ship would not allow her to be transported to a full medical center with regard to the ships budget and not the passengers well being.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

Three Construction Worker Injuries at Ground Zero

In recent weeks, three construction workers have been injured in seperate construction accidents at Ground Zero.

The first accident occured May 22, when a 26-year-old worker was injured while a hose pumping material into a retaining wall under construction, broke loose and struck him in the head and torso. He is still in a coma, said a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York.

The cause of the accident is being investigated by the Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

On June 25, while working at the site, a Port Authority employee fell off a ladder hurting his hand. And on June 22 an ironworker tripped and broke his ankle during work on the new transit hub.

The number of construction workers at the site in recent months has doubled to more than 600 people a day, working on a 1,776-foot skyscraper, a $2.1 billion transit hub, a memorial to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and preparing foundations for more office towers.

A study last year by OSHA reported a sharp increase in the number of construction deaths citywide, and injuries have increased during a massive building boom in the city, industry officials said.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

Tragic Crash Kills Five High School Graduates

A horrific car accident claimed the lives of five cheerleaders on Tuesday night after their SUV swerved into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on with a tractor-trailer.

The accident occurred only five days after Fairport High School celebrated its graduation. The five girls, cheerleaders, were among the graduating class.

The girls were traveling on a two lane highway while being followed by another group of four classmates en route to a vacation home. Attempting to pass a van that was traveling too slowly, the driver of the SUV passed the vehicle on the two lane road but when she pulled back into her lane, she over corrected and hit a tractor-trailer.

The crash knocked down utility lines and cut phone service in the western half of Ontario County. The truck driver wasn't injured in the crash.

One of the passengers in the trailing vehicle, an 18-year-old girl, said "In our car, we could see the truck coming, and we all started screaming." Within a moment the SUV hit the oncoming tractor trailer and burst into flames.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

Three wrongful death product liability lawsuits have been voluntarily dismissed against TASER International Inc. (TASR).

Plaintiffs in the McCargo wrongful death suit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee; the Lieberman wrongful death suit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and lastly, the Salazar wrongful death suit filed in Superior Court of the State of Arizona in and for the County of Maricopa - all agreed to voluntarily dismiss wrongful death lawsuits filed against Taser International.

The McCargo suit had just been served upon Taser International and was dismissed before Taser even had the chance to file a response.
